Scientific culture
At the Institute of Chemical Research (IIQ), we conduct a series of outreach activities to bring the research carried out at the Institute closer to the public. These activities include visits to our facilities, public lectures, and hands-on workshops related to our research, among which we can highlight:
- Catalysis. Decomposition of hydrogen peroxide: volcano, catalase.
- Molecular gastronomy. Spherification: water and juice pearls; hydrogels: agar-agar spaghetti.
- Chromatography
- Polymers. Preparation of nylon thread and slime
- Chemical reactions:
– Reduction of permanganate by sucrose in a basic medium
– Invisible ink
– Clock reactions
– Separation of two neighbors on the periodic table: Nickel and Cobalt
– The blue bottle
– Oscillating reaction
The IIQ participates in, among others, the following outreach events:
- Seville Science Fair
- Pint of Science
- European Researchers’ Night
- Science Week. “Coffee with Science” talk and cicCartuja Young Science Award Day
- International Day of Women and Girls in Science (February 11)
- Science in the Neighborhood. Workshops and visits.
- Cultural Classroom in Prisons
Throughout the academic year, guided tours of the IIQ are offered to students from 1st and 2nd year of Bachillerato (Upper Secondary Education). These visits must be requested through the cicCartuja website. In addition, our scientific and technical staff give talks and workshops in various primary and secondary schools.
