Biography

Antonio Rodríguez-Delgado is Associate Professor in the Department of Inorganic Chemistry at the University of Seville and a staff researcher at the Institute of Chemical Research (IIQ, CSIC–University of Seville). He earned his degree in Chemical Sciences from the University of Alcalá (1996) and obtained the equivalent of the current Master’s degree (formerly known as the Licentiate Thesis) in 1998 under the supervision of Prof. P. Royo. He began his doctoral training in 1999 at the University of Leeds (United Kingdom) under the supervision of Prof. M. Bochmann, earning his PhD from the University of East Anglia in 2003. Between 2003 and 2005, he was a postdoctoral researcher in the Department of Chemistry at Colorado State University (USA) in the group of Prof. E. Y.-X. Chen, where he combined research and teaching activities, progressing from postdoctoral researcher to Associate Professor during the 2004/2005 academic year.

In 2005, he was awarded a Ramón y Cajal contract and joined the Institute of Chemical Research (IIQ), a joint CSIC–University of Seville center, in 2006, working in the research group of Drs. Cámpora and Palma. In 2011, he obtained a permanent position as Associate Professor. In 2013 and 2015, he undertook research stays within the Salvador Madariaga/Fulbright Program at Colorado State University (2015), and in 2018 at the Institute of Nanoscience, Nanotechnology and Molecular Materials (INAMOL), Faculty of Environmental Sciences, University of Castilla-La Mancha.

He is the author of 36 scientific publications. He has co-supervised one doctoral thesis (2016), supervised five Bachelor’s Theses and two Master’s Theses, and is currently co-supervising a doctoral thesis. In the field of knowledge transfer, he received first prize in the 15th University of Seville Entrepreneurship Ideas Competition (2020) and second prize at EBCITE 2020 for the patent “Composite biomaterials for 3D printing of medical devices,” and he is co-founder of the technology-based company 3D-Bones S.L. (2021). Between 2017 and 2021, he served as Deputy Director of the Institute of Chemical Research.

 

Research interests

Since joining the IIQ, Dr. Rodríguez Delgado has developed research lines focused on the synthesis and reactivity of organometallic complexes of earth-abundant metals, including transition metals (Mn, Fe) as well as main-group metals (Zn, Mg, Al), supported by non-innocent 2,6-bis(iminopyridine) (BIP) ligands and related derivatives. Initially, his work focused on olefin polymerization processes (Mn, Fe), as well as ring-opening polymerization (ROP) and the controlled depolymerization of cyclic esters. Moreover, the versatility of aluminum and zinc compounds has primarily led to the design of bioinspired metal complexes and biomimetic systems of an organometallic nature, a line of research that currently constitutes one of his main areas of investigation.
