Biography

José L. de Paz obtained his bachelor’s degree in Chemistry from the University of Seville in 1996. He received his PhD degree under the supervision of Prof. Manuel Martín-Lomas and Prof. José M. Lassaletta in 2000 (Instituto de Investigaciones Químicas, CSIC-US). In 2004, he joined Prof. Seeberger’s group at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology (ETH, Zurich, Switzerland). In 2007, José L. de Paz returned to Spain and joined Dr. Pedro Nieto’s group at the Instituto de Investigaciones Químicas (Seville), where he became tenured scientist in 2008.

Research interests

My scientific activity focuses on carbohydrate chemistry, oligosaccharide synthesis and the study of carbohydrate-protein interactions. During my PhD I worked on the total synthesis of heparin oligosaccharides for structural and biological studies. In my postdoctoral stage, I developed glycan microarrays for the analysis of carbohydrate-protein interactions. Currently, my research interests include the development of novel synthetic approaches for glycosaminoglycan oligosaccharide mimetics, and the study of their interactions with protein receptors by using fluorescence-based techniques.
