Biography

Julia Berbel Menacho is a pre-doctoral researcher with an interdisciplinary background, specialising in the design, development and study of molecular systems with biomedical applications. In July 2026, she joined the Bioorganic Chemistry of Carbohydrates group, where she is working on her PhD thesis as part of the project ‘GLYCOMERS: Viromer-type glycovectors for the formulation of next-generation therapeutic nucleic acids’. Her current research focuses on the synthesis of transfection vectors based on cyclic oligosaccharides for gene therapy.

After graduating with a degree in Chemistry from the University of Seville, she steered her career towards biomedicine by completing a Master’s degree in Health Biotechnology at Pablo de Olavide University. During his time at the Andalusian Centre for Developmental Biology (CABD), he investigated the potential of complex sugars as proteasome inhibitors, acquiring a solid foundation in molecular biology, in vivo microscopy and genetics. Prior to her pre-doctoral studies, she completed a Master’s degree in Bioinformatics at the International University of Valencia, specialising in the analysis of omics data and molecular dynamics simulations. This combination of chemical, biological and computational skills enables her to carry out the design, synthesis, characterisation and evaluation of molecules with therapeutic potential, applying this knowledge directly to her current research.
